To the editor:

The new Brown County Schools superintendent contract has been released and is available on the school website, brownco.k12.in.us.

This contract will be presented to the public for comment on Monday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Brown County Intermediate School. You may also contact your local school board members with your questions and comments. The vote to approve the contract will take place on May 31.

According to this five-year continuous contract, our new superintendent will start with a base pay of $125,000.

If the superintendent is evaluated as highly effective or effective and meets certain performance goals, the local school board has the sole discretionary authority to approve increases in base pay from $1 to $10,000 annually; in addition, each year she could receive a stipend pay of $1 to $10,000 in the form of a lump sum payment.

The contract grants 20 vacation days and 12 sick leave days (unused to accrue to a cap of 90). Additionally, the contract honors sick days from her previous employer amounting to 152 days. Health and life insurance are offered for $1 each a year.

The board shall pay another $20,000 annually which she may but is not required to contribute to a 403(b) annuity plan.

Superintendent contracts in surrounding school systems which have student bodies of similar sizes are listed here with their base salary. Benefit packages vary. All these school systems have a three-year superintendent contract.
