ELECTION: Biddle, Harden to face each other for commissioner in November
Updated on: 05.07.14

The November contest for the District 2 county commissioner seat is set.

On the Democrat ticket will be Jeff Harden, who won by 244 votes over Ron Sanders in the May 6 primary.

Diana McDonald Biddle earned the Republican nomination by receiving 294 more votes than Kyle Hayworth.

“Everybody has been telling me this is when the real work begins,” said Harden, who is seeking his first political office.

He knows he has a tough opponent in the general election. Biddle respects him, too.

“He’s going to make me work for it,” she said.

Biddle believes her experience as a small business owner and winner of multiple elections gave her the edge over Hayworth, another political newcomer. He received 738 votes.

The current county councilwoman said being a commissioner requires a multi-dimensional person.

The three-member board oversees county properties such as the courthouse and jail; ensures county roads and bridges are maintained; authorizes contracts; sets personnel policy and handles economic development efforts.

Harden plans to continue attending public meetings to keep abreast of what issues the county faces. He wants to make sure he is ready, so if he wins in November he can step into office with as little a learning curve as possible.

If Biddle wins in November, the Republican Party would have to select a replacement for her on the county council through a caucus. Biddle began serving on the council in 2013 and will be midway through her four-year term at the end of this year.

The general election winner in November will replace Republican John Kennard and join Republicans Dave Anderson and Joe Wray on the three-member county executive board in January. Kennard is not seeking re-election.

District 2 covers all of Jackson Township and the western half of Washington Township.

Sanders and Hayworth could not be reached for comment.
