ELECTION: Republicans Magner, Stephens advance in trustee races
Updated on: 05.06.14

Republicans Michael Magner and Phil Stephens will meet Democrat opponents in November in the county's only contested trustee races.

Four Republicans faced off for the two township trustee slots in the primary.

Magner beat Teresa Ghere-Martinez for the chance to compete in the Washington Township race. Washington covers the county's central corridor along State Road 46 and extends south down the western edge of the county.

"It feels great," Magner said. "I just hope I can rely on the people to turn out for the general election."

This was Ghere-Martinez's first campaign. She said it was a learning experience.

"I haven't decided, but I may try again sometime in the future," she said.

Republican Brian Gabriel is the incumbent Washington Township trustee, but he is not running for reelection. Magner will face off against Democrat candidate Melissa Stinson in the general election.

In Hamblen Township, incumbent trustee Phil Stephens defeated Bill Stogsdill. Hamblen covers most of the northeastern corner of Brown County including the Cordry Sweetwater Conservancy District.

"I want to run a good, solid campaign in the fall," Stephens said. "I'd like to work on more door-to-door. The primary was about the talking to Republicans. I'd like to reach out more to Democratic voters."

Stogsdill was not available for comment. He was not present at Republican headquarters.

Stephens will face Democrat Mary Lou McCann in the general election.

Township trustees are responsible for helping low-income residents pay for living expenses, like utility payments and housing.

They also maintain cemeteries and contract for fire protection in their townships.
