Howard E. Waltman, 87, Franklin

Howard E. Waltman, 87, Franklin, passed peacefully on Friday morning, April 25, 2014 at the Franklin United Methodist Community. He was a former longtime resident of Morgantown.

Howard was born in Brown County May 26, 1926, to the late Elza E. and Helen Blanche (Percifield) Waltman. He was a 1944 graduate of Helmsbug High School in Brown County and went on to serve during World War II as a seaman first class with the United States Navy. He married Phyllis L. Skinner May 20, 1949, at Morgantown United Methodist Church. She survives after 64 loving years of marriage.

Howard retired in 1984 as a test man from Indiana Bell. After retirement, he and his wife moved to Las Vegas, Nev., to be closer to their grandchildren. While in Las Vegas, Howard worked as district director in the circulation department for the Las Vegas Sun newspaper for six years.

He was a 54-year member of Morgantown United Methodist Church and a member of the Telephone Pioneers Club of America since 1956. Howard was a former member of the Morgantown Volunteer Fire Department, Jackson Township Trustees Advisory Board, and the Franklin American Legion post #205. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and was a fan of NASCAR and Indy Racing League. Howard enjoyed traveling, working in his garden and cutting and splitting firewood with his friends.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis L. Waltman of Franklin; children, Elizabeth “Libby” (Jeff) Carlson of Las Vegas, Nev. and Jay H. (Staci) Waltman of Albert Lea, Minn.; grandchildren, Josh (April) Carlson and Jason Carlson, both of Las Vegas, Nev., Jane Carlson of Los Angeles, Calif., Anna, Kacey and Jack Waltman, all of Minnesota; great-grandchild, Cruz Carlson of Las Vegas; his siblings, Marjorie Young of Columbus and Helen Peasley of California City, Calif.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, William S. Waltman; and a brother, Myron Waltman.

The Rev. Jill Howard will conduct a memorial service at noon Friday, May 2, at Meredith–Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown.

Friends can call from 11a.m. until service time Friday, May 2 at the funeral home.

A private family graveside service will be conducted with military honors prior to the service Friday, May 2 at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
