Four Corners proposal well received
Updated on: 02.27.14

No one at this morning's special commissioners meeting opposed the idea of transferring ownership of the Village Green from the county to the town.

The nine people at the meeting said they supported the town taking over management of the land that is also known as the Four Corners, at Main and Jefferson streets just a block west of the courthouse.

A common theme emerged during the discussion: leave the area as green space for continued use by local groups and artists. Everyone agreed on no commercial development going there.

Town Councilman Charles “Buzz” King said the town is willing to “spruce up” the area. “I just think it’s a great idea,” he said about transferring ownership.

Brown County resident Keith Baker wanted to know cost to the county versus revenue from renting the space. County Administrator Michael Thompson said with insurance, utilities and maintenance costs, owning the properties costs the county more than it makes.

Commissioner Joe Wray said there is no reason for both the county and the town to continue paying to insure the properties.

King said the Four Corners, or Village Green, used to be the center of town. In 1933 or 1934, Jefferson Street ceased being the main drag through town when State Road 135 was built.

King would like the area to become a magnet for tourists through the events conducted there.

The others who attended the meeting included Bruce Gould, Julie Winn, Lamond Martin, Steve Gore, Jenny Johnson, Brenda Badger and Marilyn Rudd.

The commissioners did not vote. They said they wanted to hold another public meeting, but this time, in the evening to give folks another chance for input. A date for that session has not been set. When it is, it will be announced in the Brown County Democrat, on www.bcdemocrat.com and The Democrat's Facebook page.
