Leona I. Patterson, 91, North Manchester

Leona I. Patterson, 91, passed away Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, in North Manchester. She was a resident of North Manchester and formerly of Morgantown.

She was born Oct. 30, 1922, in  St. Hilaire, Minn., to Oscar F. and Leona L. (Just) Carlson. She was raised in Iron River, Mich.

She married Patrick O. Patterson on July 29, 1945. He preceded her in death.

She lived in Indianapolis for nearly 30 years and then was a resident of Brown County for more than 30 years.

She is survived by a son, Patrick O. (Barbara) Patterson Jr. of Wisconsin and Washington, D.C.; three daughters, Peggy J. Naile of Whiteland, Wendy J. (John) Ostermeyer of Monrovia and Vicky L. (Steve) Eisenhut of Roanoke;  11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; identical twin sister, Leora I. Markwort of California; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a sister, Surella J. Wodzinski.

Leona earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Northern Michigan University in Marquette and her master’s degree in library science from Butler University.

She retired in 1989 after 15 years as librarian at Indian Creek Middle School in Trafalgar. Previously, she was librarian at Harrison Hill Elementary School in Lawrence. She was a dedicated Girl Scout leader for many years and was a member of the National Education Association, Countryside Spinners and Weavers of Johnson County, Brown County Bluebird Society and Humm’n Strummers Musical Group.

A celebration of life gathering was Jan. 19 at Morgantown United Methodist Church.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel.
