James A. Burton, 71, Deputy, died at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at his home.

Mr. Burton, an Air Force veteran, retired from Cummins Engine Company and was an Indiana thoroughbred horse owner and breeder. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening, card playing and horse racing.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Ernie Lamb officiating. Calling will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4 and from 2 p.m. until service time Friday. Burial will be in Scipio Cemetery with military rites conduted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Jennings County.

Born in Bethany, July 13, 1938, Mr. Burton was the son of Frank S. Burton and Maude Harmon Duggin. He married Lois F. Brown.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James A. "Jimmy" (Connie) Burton of Jacksonville, Fla.; daughters, Sandra (Ron) Rosenbalm of North Vernon, Sonya (Teddy) Rose of Brown County and Kimberly (Travis) Burton of Greenwood; grandchildren, Russell and A.J. Waltman, Jake Burton and Culley and Sarah Burton; great-grandchildren, Gracie Waltman, Russell and Rachel Waltman, Alan Waltman and Chyanne Walton; brothers, Frank Burton of Madison and Paul Duggin of Elizabethtown; and sisters, Nellie Sexton of Elizabethtown, Margaret Hensley of Columbus and Eula Duggin of Scottsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Alta Perdue.
