Water rising around the county
Updated on: 12.21.13

Nearly continuous rain for almost 24 hours has caused roads to flood and water to rise into yards around Brown County.

Swift-flowing water over State Road 135 South swept a pickup truck into the swollen David Branch creek after dark. All four slab crossings were impassible by 10 p.m., but some large vehicles were still driving around the barricades on the south end.

South of Story, 135 had been closed since mid-afternoon, dispatch radio reported.

Along State Road 46 East, front yards were becoming lakes in the Gnaw Bone area. Salt Creek Golf Course and its access road had been swallowed by the creek as of 9:30 p.m. Across the road at Creekstone Apartments, light was reflecting off the rain-soaked ground. The Salt Creek Road entrance to the apartments was covered by water, police reported over dispatch radio.

State Road 46 West was blocked briefly by a downed tree that covered the westbound lane. Past it, water was ponding in the curves near the old Ski World.

Since midnight Saturday, Brown County has received between 1 and 2 inches of rain, the National Weather Service reported.

The flash flood warning has been extended to 5 a.m. Sunday.

12:20 a.m. UPDATE: The Brown County State Park north gate has been closed due to flooding, Brown County dispatch reports. The west gate is the only one open to enter or leave the park.
