Storm knocks out power to hundreds, heavily damages home
Updated on: 11.18.13

The severe storms that blew through Brown County Nov. 17 took out the upper floor of a Sweetwater Lake home and sent a tree through the roof of a house on State Road 135 South.

Brian Lucas, public information officer for the Cordry Sweetwater Volunteer Fire Department, reported the lakefront home on Sunset Drive sustained severe wind damage. The home is owned by Thomas and Sally Hruban of Carmel.

"We don't know yet if it was a tornado," Lucas said.

By late afternoon Nov. 18, Cordry Sweetwater firefighters had identified seven to 10 more homes with minor damage from wind and downed trees.

Wind damage was reported throughout the county. Downed trees temporarily blocked numerous roads. A neighbor reported a tree through a roof at a house in the 1600 block of State Road 135 South, north of Gnaw Bone Camp.

Residents of Upper Schooner Road reported seeing tornado activity in the air, resulting in hail damage and downed trees. Local officials had not yet confirmed whether or not any tornadoes moved through the area.

By mid-morning Nov. 18, Duke Energy and South Central REMC were reporting 264 Brown County customers still without power.
