Charles E. Gooch, 82, Kokomo

Charles E. Gooch, 82, Kokomo, formerly of Indianapolis and Nineveh, died at 8:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at North Woods Village in Kokomo.

He was born in New Castle Jan. 24, 1931, son of John and Julia (Gourley) Gooch.

He married Audrey Atkinson on Aug. 9, 2008; she survives.

Charles was a 1949 graduate of New Castle High School and went to work for Chrysler Corp. after graduation. He joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1953. During active duty, he served in the Korean War.

Charles retired from IndyGo (Indianapolis Public Transportation Corp.) in 2002. He worked for Pan Am in Hialeah, Fla., for nine years prior to his return to Indiana.

Charles had fond memories of having lived more than 20 years on Sweetwater Lake and cherished his Nineveh family and friends.

He was a member of First Church of God in Kokomo.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey; a daughter, Lugena Gooch of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a son, Bradley A. Gooch and his partner, Tony Barnhart, of Indianapolis; and two sisters, Evelyn Rainey of Indianapolis and Phyllis Stonerock of New Castle. In addition, Charles is survived by his wife Audrey’s four children, Debbie (Richard) Pine and Cathie (Steven) Davis, both of Kokomo, Teresa (Michael) Caldwell of Crown Point and Kevin (Kristie) Atkinson of Corning, N.Y.; and 11 stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Charles’ life was conducted Oct. 12 at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, Lincoln Road Chapel in Kokomo, with Pastor John Newton officiating. The family received friends before the service at the funeral home. Entombment was at Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum, with military honors provided by the U.S. Army and VFW military rites team.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home; or First Church of God, 5737 S. Park Road, Kokomo, IN 46902.
