Crystal 'Sylvia' Cates, 79, Morgantown

Crystal “Sylvia” (Gossling) Cates, 79, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at her home in Morgantown.

Sylvia was born in Indianapolis July 9, 1934, to Walter and Crystal (Rook) Gossling. She was a 1950 graduate of Morgantown High School and went on to earn her nursing degree from St. Vincent School of Nursing in Indianapolis in 1952. Sylvia married Arthur Curtis Cates Sr. Nov. 12, 1976, in Springfield, Tenn. He preceded her in death June 25, 2004, after 27 loving years of marriage.

Sylvia’s true passion in life was being a registered nurse and being able to help others in need. She retired in 2005 as an RN after 50 years of service working both at Morgan County Hospital and the Johnson County hospital. Sylvia enjoyed the outdoors by working in her flower gardens and walking with her dog, “Reggie.” She loved all animals and enjoyed reading.

She is survived by a niece, Kyle (Steven) DeWeese of Avon; and two stepchildren, Susan Frye of Takoma, Wash., and Arthur C. Cates Jr. of Maple Falls, Wash.

Sylvia was preceded in death by a sister, Veva Snelling.

The Rev. Mark Boardman will conduct a funeral service at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown. Friends can call from 11 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Morgantown.

Memorial contributions can be sent in honor of Sylvia to the Morgan County Humane Society, 690 W. Mitchell Ave., Martinsville, IN 46151.

Expressions of caring and kindness can be made to the Cates family at www.meredith-clark.com.
