No count yet on courthouse loan signatures
Updated on: 09.10.13

The deadline for signatures to be turned in for and against a loan to renovate the Brown County Courthouse was Monday at 4 p.m.

Tuesday morning, representatives of the Brown County Clerk's Office and Brown County Auditor's Office said they didn't yet have a signature count to release. Brown County Clerk Beth Mulry and Deputy Clerk Brenda Woods were out of the office until Wednesday, and Deputy Auditor Donna Lutes said the signature packets in the auditor's office had not been opened.

"We're not allowed to talk about it," Lutes said.

The clerk's office has up to 15 business days to confirm that signatures are from voters registered in Brown County. From there, the auditor's office has 10 business days to verify that any other signatures are from property owners in Brown County. After that, the clerk's office has an additional 10 days to certify the results. If more than 10,000 signatures are collected, the law allows extra time.

The number of certified signatures on each side -- for or against the loan -- will determine whether or not the county can proceed with plans to spend an estimated $6.5 million to renovate the historic courthouse and add onto it. The side with the most signatures wins.

Updates will be shared as they are available.
