Edwin L. Wessel, 84, Trafalgar

Edwin L. Wessel, 84, Trafalgar, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013.

He was born Nov. 27, 1928, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Louis and Helen (Coughlin) Wessel, who preceded him in death. He married Shirley May Bradbury Jan. 3, 1953; she survives in Franklin.

He graduated from Western Hills High School, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Ohio State University, where he was a member of ROTC. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and served from 1953-1954 as first lieutenant in the United States Air Force. After returning from Korea, he worked as a cattle buyer for Hy-Grade Cattle Company, pioneering the direct buying of fat cattle from individual farmers. A highlight of his buying career was traveling to farms by helicopter to purchase the cattle. In 1961, he joined Stadler Packing Company in Columbus as a cattle buyer, retiring in 1984.

He purchased his farm in Trafalgar in 1967, fulfilling a lifelong dream of living on his own farm. By 1972, he began pursuing another goal of having a herd of "good black cows" by purchasing his first registered Angus cattle and establishing Wessel Angus, which continues today under the direction of his son, Richard. He enjoyed gardening and farming and took great pride in providing food for his family and friends. An average tomato crop was over a hundred plants.

He was a member of St. George Lutheran Church, Edinburgh; the Masonic Lodge in Cincinnati, Ohio;  Indiana Beef Cattle Association; Johnson County Beef Cattle Association; the American Angus Association; the Indiana Angus Association and Southern Indiana Angus Association.

Surviving are his wife; children, Barbara (Paul) Logsdon of Lima, Ohio, Elizabeth Anne Wessel of Springboro, Ohio, Richard (Betty) Wessel of Trafalgar, and Linda (Christopher) Vensel of Westfield; six grandchildren, Daniel (Alexis), Sarah and Helen Logsdon, Kevin Wessel, Laura Wessel and Alexandra Vensel.

Visitation was to be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St., (U.S. 31 North), Franklin.

Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at St. George Lutheran Church, 10931 South 600 West, Edinburgh. Friends can call from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. Burial will follow at St. George Lutheran Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to Worship for Shut-Ins, 5 Martin Luther Drive, Fort Wayne, IN 46825.

Online condolences can be expressed at www.flinnmaguire.net.
