James R. “Bob” Childs Sr., 87, Brown County

James R. “Bob” Childs Sr., 87, Brown County, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, Aug. 18, 2013 at his home.

He was born in Brown County June 12, 1926, to the late Theodore and Lola Childs. Bob was a 1944 graduate of Helmsburg High School and went on to serve as a private first class with the United States Army during World War II. After serving his country, he came home and married Dora E. Hollan Aug. 9, 1947 in Nashville. She preceded him in death May 13, 2002, after 54 devoted years of marriage.

Bob retired from the Hugh J. Baker Company in Indianapolis where he was the maintenance supervisor and was a member of Brown County Community Christian Church. He was very mechanically inclined and was always working on old clocks, Victrola record players, or automobiles. Bob also enjoyed traveling with his family on camping trips and working puzzles.        

Bob is survived by his children, Robert Joe Childs Sr., Ronald Lee Childs, Donald Lee Childs, James R. Childs Jr. and Robin E. Childs, all of Indianapolis, Roger  A. Childs of Brown County, Gregory L. Childs of  Yuma, Ariz. and Jerry C. Childs of Florida. He will be remembered by his sister, Blanche Daughtery of Florida; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. 

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Lola Childs; a daughter, Noretta Diane Spurlock-Wilkerson; three siblings, Mary Voland, Clinton and Ted Childs; and a great-great-grandson, Bryson Norris. 

The Rev. Ken Smith will conduct a funeral service at 7 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 21 at Brown County Community Christian Church, 2370 Main Street in Helmsburg. Friends can call from 4 p.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22  at Nebo Memorial Park Cemetery in Martinsville with military rites presented by the Brown County Honor Guard.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Meredith–Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.
