Helen Hessler Reeve, 97

Helen Hessler Reeve, 97, passed away peacefully July 28, 2013, in Midlothian, Va.

She was born Sept. 11, 1915, in Cicero, Ill., to Otto J. and Estelle H. Hessler.  She grew up in Western Springs, Ill., where she married Kenneth J. Reeve in 1935, who predeceased her in 2012.

In 1949, Helen and her family moved to Brown County, where she lived until 2005. Her artist husband was a member of the Brown County Art Gallery which was one focus of her many volunteer activities. She was a genealogical researcher and compiler with her husband of a number of books of genealogical data published by the Brown County Historical Society where they were active members.

Helen was an avid reader of history and science, a rock and shell collector, and enjoyed gardening and nature. She took delight in encouraging the curiosity of young people. She served as a substitute teacher, 4-H leader, and PTO president. She was a devoted helpmate to her husband and a patient and loving mother, approaching life with energy, ingenuity, and optimism.

Survivors are her daughter, Susan R. Cash (George) of Chesterfield, Va.; son, Daniel H. Reeve (Martha) of Swanville, Maine; and grandchildren, Gregory Miles of Fairfax, Va., Andrew Reeve (Kristina) of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Lee Reeve of San Diego, Calif.

The family appreciates the kind care provided by Brandermill Woods Health Care Center. Services will be private.

Memorials can be made to the Brown County Historical Society, P.O. Box 668, Nashville, IN 47448, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
