Walter Dale Speer, 90, of Martinsville

Walter Dale Speer, 90, of Martinsville, passed away Friday evening, July 19, 2013 at Franklin United Methodist Community.

Dale was born in Bedford Feb. 13, 1923 to the late Lloyd S. and Essie Daye (Horner) Speer. He was a 1942 graduate of Shawswick High School in Bedford and went on to serve as a specialist first class with the United States Army. Dale retired as a salesman in 1976 from Union Special Sewing Machine Company after 20 years of service. Prior to that, he was the plant manager for Gordon Manufacturing Company in Louisville, Ky.

While living in Martinsville, Dale was involved in activities at the Ken Mar Senior Living Community. He attended church at Ken Mar Chapel and was a former elder, treasurer and vice president of the Ken Mar Council. Dale also was active in the Morgantown Senior Center. He enjoyed writing letters to many pen pals, entertaining the ladies and playing euchre.

He will be remembered by his sister, Georgia Faye Henderson of New Albany; sister-in-law, Nadine Speer of Morgantown; nieces and nephews, Virginia Ratliff of Morgantown, Denny Speer of Isle of Palm, S.C., David Speer of Morgantown, Stephen Speer of Hot Springs, Ark., Elizabeth Wilson of Amity, Emily Rusher of Trafalgar, Patricia Sebesky of Franklin, Amy Sichting of Morgantown, Roger Henderson of New Albany and Jordan Henderson of Dayton, Ohio; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon Speer.

The Rev. Jeanna Chadder will conduct a funeral service at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 23 at Meredith–Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown. Friends can call from 5 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Military rites will be presented by the Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars honor guards following the funeral service.  Burial will be at Fairview Church Cemetery in Bedford.
