Leslie William “Bill” Newman, 68, Santee, Calif.

Leslie William “Bill” Newman, 68, Santee, Calif., passed away Friday, July 5, 2013 at his home.

He was born July 10, 1944 in Norfolk, Va., to Leslie W. and Almeda J. Newman. 

Survivors include his siblings, Jane Gore of Nashville, Gene Newman of San Diego, Calif., and Diane Schmidt of Plant City, Fla.; nephews Kevin Gore of Nashville and Bryan Gore (Wendi) of Columbus; niece, Karen Valenzuela; four great-nieces and nephews, River Boyce, Kaya, Sawyer, and Josslin Gore.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Josie Newman; and a niece, Kathy Giroux

Bill quit high school and joined the Navy to serve his county. When he completed his first tour of duty, he went back to finish high school and received his diploma. 

Bill was passionate about the Greyhound Rescue and Adoption Legion and donated countless hours to its causes. Bill was a car enthusiast, especially Volkswagen. It was not unusual to see an engine on his dining room table that he had torn down and put back together. 

Bill was retired but was employed part time as a driver for a local auto parts store.
