Martha (Smyth) Rund, 91, Trafalgar

Martha Louise (Smyth) Rund passed away in her 91st year Saturday evening, June 8, 2013, at Brown County Health & Living Community in Nashville.

She was a resident of Trafalgar and a very active senior in Morgantown up until the end. Martha was always involved and dedicated to her family, church, work and community. She, along with her great sense of humor, will be deeply missed by all those who were blessed to know her.

On July 13, 1921, Martha was born in Morgantown to her parents, the late Sidney P. and Addie Marie (Lindley) Smyth. She was a 1939 graduate of Morgantown High School and went on to graduate from the Campater School of Indianapolis in 1942. Martha married Melvin F. Rund Nov. 12, 1949, in Morgantown. He preceded her in death June 29, 2005, after 56 loyal years of marriage.

Martha started her 62-year working career in 1942 for Stokely-Van Camp in the accounting department in Indianapolis. After eight years there, she worked in the cafeteria as a cook at Morgantown Elementary School from 1964-1967. She finally retired at the age of 83 from First State Bank of Morgantown as a Bookkeeper after 37.5 years of service.

Martha was an 83-year member of Morgantown United Methodist Church where she was involved in many different roles: operated the nursery for 11 years, and was the former financial secretary, trustee and treasurer. She was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and a former board member of Morgantown Community Food Pantry. Martha also held various offices on the Morgantown Alumni Association and PTO. She served as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and as a room mother volunteer at Morgantown Elementary School. She enjoyed cooking, canning and helping others.

Martha is survived by her children, Donna E. (Jim) Bond of Brown County and David A. Rund of Trafalgar. She will be remembered by her grandchildren, Jamie (Jessica) Rund and Brad (Brandi) Rund, both of Trafalgar, Dorinda (Tom) Earhart of Omaha, Neb., and Jeb (Angie) Bond of Brown County; great-grandchildren, Addie, Wyatt, Bradin and Brianna Rund, Charlie, Benjamin and Wesley Earhart, and Eli Wilkinson.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Paul and Ralph Smyth.

The Rev. Jill Howard will conduct a funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 12 at Morgantown United Methodist Church, 20 E. Washington St. in Morgantown. Friends can call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown and from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Martha will be laid to rest next to her husband in East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.

Memorial contributions can be sent in honor of Martha to the Morgantown United Methodist Church Trustee’s Fund, P.O. Box 226, Morgantown, IN 46160.

Expressions of caring and kindness can be made to the Rund family at www.meredith-clark.com.
