YMCA, parks and rec team up to offer summer day camp
Updated on: 05.17.13

The Brown County YMCA and Brown County Parks & Recreation have joined forces to offer summer day camp for children who are entering kindergarten through the sixth grade.

YMCA Executive Director Kim Robinson and Brown County Parks & Recreation Director Mark Shields feel the combining of the two programs will give the kids of Brown County the best of both worlds and will use both organizations’ resources, a press release reads. Last summer, both organizations offered separate day camps.

Activities will be offered on weekdays May 30-Aug. 2 (excluding July 4) from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The program will feature weekly field trips both in and out of county, including the Brown County State Park pool, Bluespring Caverns in Bedford, Kids Commons in Columbus, CYO Camp Rancho Framasa, Bryan Park Pool in Bloomington, the Kentucky Science Center in Louisville and Lake Monroe in Bloomington. Field trips cost $5 or less, in addition to the camp fee. Brown County Schools buses will be used to transport campers.

There will be a weekly trip to the library for the summer reading program via the Nashville Express “train.”

The Indiana Ice hockey team will visit on Monday, June 17 at 10 a.m., and set up a rink, weather-permitting in the Y parking lot for kids to play hockey.

Campers also will be tending the Y Kids Crops garden throughout the summer, including planting and harvesting, tasting and selling crops for donations.

Rates are $25 per day for the first child, $20 for the second child and $15 for each additional child in a family. The weekly rate is $95 for the first child, $75 for the second and $60 for additional children.

For free and reduced lunch-qualifying students, the daily rate is $16 for the first child, $12 for the second child and $10 for additional children. The weekly rate is $80 for the first child, $60 for the second and $50 for each additional child in a family.

Children must bring a lunch, morning snack and bathing suits and towels every day.

When at day camp, kids get to learn about nature, take on new responsibilities, gain independence, and develop essential social skills and new relationships. We really encourage parents to give their kids the gift of camp so that every child can benefit from the experience.”
