Brown County Schools new district maps
Updated on: 05.14.13

New district maps for Brown County Schools have divided the Nashville Elementary area among the corporation's three remaining elementary schools: Helmsburg, Sprunica and Van Buren.

Corporation officials began work on the maps in response to a mid-March decision by the Brown County Schools Board of Trustees to convert Nashville Elementary an all-county fifth- and sixth-grade intermediate school and move the remaining K-4 students to the outlying elementaries.

As of Monday, all preschool classes will be located in the outlying schools, as well. Original plans had two of three sections slated to remain in the intermediate school building. Now, each elementary building will have one preschool class.

The change in the corporation's structure is expected to eliminate 14-16 teaching positions through attrition over the next two to three years, in order to reduce general fund expenditures and avoid an annual general fund deficit of more than $1 million.

In Indiana, the state provides public schools' general fund dollars through a formula based primarily on student population. Brown County's student count has steadily dropped for the past decade or more, but its elementary teaching structure has remained largely the same.

In recent years, that's led to favorably small class sizes at the elementary level, but corporation officials have stated on multiple occasions that the state funding formula just doesn't support the low teacher-to-student ratios.
