Last day to turn in courthouse remonstrance signatures
Updated on: 05.10.13

Today at 4 p.m. is the deadline to file petitions of remonstrance against the courthouse renovation project.

State law allows property owners and taxpayers who oppose any property tax increase for paying off debt of more than $2 million to sign a petition, before the county enters into that debt.

The county commissioners are seeking a bond of up to $6.5 million to renovate and add onto the historic Brown County Courthouse. After interest, the total cost could be as much as $8.25 million.

The remonstrance process began April 10. If fewer than 100 signatures are gathered and verified by the county auditor's and clerk's offices, the project can proceed. If at least 100 signatures are gathered and verified, phase two of the remonstrance will begin, during which people in favor of and against entering into the debt will collect signatures. After phase two, whichever side collects the most signatures, wins.

More about this process was printed in the April 17 paper. Extra copies are available at the Brown County Democrat office.
