Remains identified as local woman's
Updated on: 04.25.13

The remains two mushroom hunters found April 11 are those of Kate McGrayel, a Brown County woman missing since April 2010.

McGrayel was 26 when she left the home she shared with her mother in the 2500 block of Wise Hollow Road. Family members believe she left on her own accord.

In December 2010, her father, Jim McGrayel, posted missing person flyers around the region, asking anyone who had seen her to let him know that she was OK.

He described her as a passionate, physically frail woman with a big heart for ministry.

“She’s always been the point of the spear for any Christian activity,” he said in December 2010.

The Brown County High School graduate was the first child in her family to graduate from college, earning a graphic design degree from Indiana University.

She had ministered through Campus Crusade for Christ, traveling all over the world, her father said.

A former roommate in Bloomington reported her disappearance to Brown County officers on April 22, 2010, when she received a phone call from Kate’s father, asking if she had seen her.

Kate’s bones and clothing were found in the woods on a remote hillside behind her home. Brown County Chief Deputy Coroner Earl Piper said his uneducated guess was that it appeared they had been there “more than a couple of years,” based on ground cover in the area.

Forensic examiners have not yet determined how McGrayel died.
