Deputy coroner: No conclusions yet from skeleton study
Updated on: 04.19.13

More than a week after mushroom hunters found human skeletal remains in the Brown County woods, the person's identity is still unknown.

Brown County Chief Deputy Coroner Earl Piper said Friday evening that he spoke to forensic examiners at the University of Indianapolis Thursday, and that he hopes to receive more information toward the beginning of next week. As soon as they are able to release the skull, Piper said it will be sent to a forensic odontologist. Comparison could then be made to dental records of missing persons.

Identifying the deceased has not been his immediate and primary focus. Piper said he didn't speak with the examiners Thursday about whether the bones were from a man or a woman.

"Of course, like everybody else, I'm anxious to get the ID," he said, "but I'm more anxious to make sure we don't do anything to damage evidence if such thing is necessary."
