Esther Muriel (Malan) Rutledge, 85, Indianapolis

Esther Muriel (Malan) Rutledge, 85, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2013, in Indianapolis. She was born Aug. 1, 1927, in Highland, Ill., to Orville and Thelma (Zilles) Malan.

Esther spent her formative years in Columbus and Brown County. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1945 and received her R.N. from Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in 1948. She later received her bachelor's in nursing from Indiana University, as well as degrees in psychology and geology. She retired as a Marion County public health nurse in 1994.

Esther had many interests, chief among them was a fascination with geology. Her favorite gifts to receive were unusual rocks and minerals. She recently combined her interests in genealogy, anthropology, and genetics by having her personal genome investigated. She was thrilled to find out where her ancestors had originated. Esther loved to garden and took pride in her ability to grow almost anything. She adored being surrounded by flowers and trees. She had a lifelong interest in education and pursued learning through reading, classes, and conversations with fascinating people. After retirement, she volunteered in the Indianapolis public libraries where her son and daughter-in-law both worked. Since she was a voracious reader, volunteering at the library meant she was enveloped by all the books she could consume. Esther was a very social person and had friends in all walks of life. She enjoyed meeting friends for lunch to talk politics and current events. She also had a great love of jazz music.

Esther Muriel (Malan) Rutledge is survived by a daughter, Rachel Rutledge; and son-in-law, Rick Kint, of Seattle; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Reta Rutledge of Beech Grove; several siblings, Barbara Strahl, Phyllis McQueary, Fred, Howard and Jack Malan, Fay Bracher, Bob Malan and Karen Streeval, of Columbus, Nashville, and Brown County; and by many, many nieces, nephews and their families.

A memorial to celebrate her life will be conducted Saturday, May 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Indianapolis Art Center in Broad Ripple, Ruth Lilly Library, 820 East 67th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46220, Phone: (317) 255-2464.
