Deputy coroner: Remains have not been identified
Updated on: 04.16.13

Despite reports to the contrary, Brown County Chief Deputy Coroner Earl Piper said Tuesday afternoon that forensic examiners haven't reported a conclusion about whether or not the human remains found in the woods Thursday are from a man or a woman.

When the determination is made, the Brown County coroner's office will receive that information from experts at the University of Indianapolis, who recovered the remains on Friday from a property off Wise Hollow Road, Piper said.

The work that forensics examiners are doing takes time, Piper noted. They did not recover a full skeleton, he said, but there are still ways to determine gender, ethnicity and other identifying characteristics from the skull and other bones.

The report Piper expects to see likely will not pinpoint an exact age of the deceased, Piper said, citing past cases he has worked on with Stephen Nawrocki, whose colleagues are studying these bones.

"The report is more likely to come back with a broader age range, like 'This person was 25-40,'" Piper said.

The forensic examiners are handling just one part of the investigation, Nawrocki said Monday. Meanwhile, police can follow up on missing person reports, and help provide information for comparison by other experts, like DNA examiners or dentists.

Nawrocki said the complete forensics examination could take about a month, but identification of the remains could come sooner through the work of those other experts.

Piper said his "uneducated guess" was that the remains had been in the woods "more than a couple of years," based on the ground cover in the area. Examiners uncovered them  "bucket by bucket" and sifted the leaves and soil to recover what was left on the hillside.
