Sandra L. (Spears) Smith, 71, Morgantown

Sandra L. (Spears) Smith, 71, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Sunday afternoon, April 7, 2013. She was a lifelong resident of Morgantown.

Sandy will be remembered for her strong faith in God and her love for her family and friends. She will be missed by all who knew her and loved her.

Sandy was born in North Vernon on Jan. 16, 1942 to the late Edward and Arlene (Lambert) Spears. She was a 1960 graduate of Morgantown High School. Playing and teaching piano was a great passion of Sandy’s and she taught private piano lessons out of her home for more than 50 years. She was most recently employed at McDonald’s Restaurant and at Grandma’s Restaurant, both in Trafalgar.

Sandy is best remembered as owner and operator, along with her children, of Smith’s Family Restaurant in Morgantown and Trafalgar from 1982 to 1994. Sandy was a member and pianist of Morning Star Baptist Church in Trafalgar and a former member of Morgantown Baptist Church. She was a member of Morgantown Order of the Eastern Star and Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority of Morgantown. She enjoyed sewing and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Sandy was known for her cooking and famous for her brownies and baked beans at family gatherings.

Sandy will be remembered by her four children, Debbie (Kenny) Ferguson and Dr. Steve Smith, both of Morgantown, Dan (Elaine) Smith of Martinsville and Sara (Joe) Barnett of Nineveh; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Gerald Eugene Smith; daughter-in-law, Tenara Anne Smith; and granddaughter, Tenara “Nikki” Jones.

The Revs. Dan Smith, Dr. Steve Smith, Burt Brock and Brett Baird will conduct a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 11, at Morgantown First Christian Church , 2717 S. Morgantown Road.

Friends can call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10 at the church.

Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Meredith–Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.
