George M. Phillips, 82, Morgantown

George M. Phillips, 82, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, April 6, 2013 at Kindred Transitional Care & Rehabilitation Center in Greenwood. He was a resident of Morgantown and former resident of Bethel, Conn.

George was born in Stamford, Conn., on Sept. 13, 1930 to the late George Morton and Mary A. (Salanika) Phillips. He was a 1951 graduate of Stamford High School and went on to serve with the United State Air Force as an Airman First Class during the Korean War. George married Norma Jean (Love) Phillips on Jan. 8, 1956 in Acton.  She preceded him in death on Aug. 3, 2011 after fifty-five loving years of marriage.

He retired in 1981 as senior sales coordinator for Perkin–Elmer Corporation in Norwalk, Conn. after 35 years of service. George was a member of Morgantown United Methodist Church and a former member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Conn. He also was a 45-year member of the Masonic Lodge Union #5 in Stamford, Conn. and the Order of Eastern Star #579 in Morgantown. George enjoyed reading, coin collecting and playing chess.

He is survived by his children, Jean E. Arpi of Martinsville, Ruth A. (Kevin) Bodnar of Bethlehem, Conn. and Paul H. Phillips of Florence, S.C. George will be remembered by his six grandchildren, Zachary, Jason, Jessica, Kimberly, Gabriella and Becca.

The Rev. Mark Matheny will conduct a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10, at Morgantown United Methodist Church, 20 E. Washington St. Friends can call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9 at the church. A Masonic service will be conducted by Morgantown Masonic Lodge at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown with military rites presented by Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars honor guards. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.
