Eldon L. Brandt, 88, Columbus

Pastor Eldon L. Brandt, 88, Columbus, died at 8:47 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Silver Oaks Health Campus.

Pastor Brandt graduated from St. Paul's College in Concordia, Mo., in January 1945, and from Concordia Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis, Mo., in June 1949. He served as pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church in Sioux City, Iowa, from 1949 to 1954, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Marion, Iowa, from 1954 to 1967 and at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Columbus from 1967 to 1992.

After retirement, he served as an interim pastor in Greensburg, Nashville and Bloomington and at St. John's White Creek from 1994 to 1995, and as pastor of St. John's from October 2000 to 2008. Pastor Brandt also served as circuit counselor of the Columbus circuit of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod; pastoral advisor of the Lutheran laymen's league tri-district (Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky); pastoral advisor of the Lutheran women's missionary league of Iowa: district east of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod; chairman of the evangelism board of Iowa district east of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod; chairman of the mission board of Iowa district east of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod; chairman of the mission board of the Indiana district of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod; member of the board of directors of Iowa district east of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod; and member of the stewardship board - Indiana district.

Funeral service was conducted Saturday, March 30 at St. John's White Creek Lutheran Church with Pastor Joshua Cook officiating. Calling was Friday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home and before the service Saturday at the church. Burial took place at the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. John's White Creek Lutheran School or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Born in Seward County, Neb., Feb. 19, 1925, Pastor Brandt was son of August Brandt and Mathilda Gade Brandt. He married Arlene Gruebel June 5, 1949. She preceded him in death Nov. 19, 2002.

Survivors include sons, Tim (Jane) Brandt of Columbus, Rev. Mark (Karen) Brandt of Frankenmuth, Mich., and Dan (Sherry) Brandt of South Carolina; daughters, Debra (Mike) Rittman of Brownstown, and Ruth (Vince) Johnson of Nineveh; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald Brandt of Brighten, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brothers, Edwin and Clifford Brandt; sisters, Irene Luebbe, Leona Koss, Nelda Polzien and Esther Pillers; and a daughter-in-law, Ann Brandt.
