N. Elizabeth “Betty” (Gregory) Martin, 98, Newburgh

N. Elizabeth “Betty” (Gregory) Martin, 98, of Newburgh, passed away at 12:05 a.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at Angel River Nursing Home. 

Betty was born Feb. 9, 1915, in Russellville, Ky., to Elzie B. Gregory and Beulah Edna Lee Gregory. In her early life, Betty spent many years as a homemaker, was affiliated with Boonville Main Street Methodist Church, Paradise Homemaker’s Club and the Warrick County Democratic Party. After her husband’s death in 1965, her life’s path included a variety of work that encompassed being a skilled cook in restaurants, at Waycross Camp and Conference Center, Brown County (a ministry division of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis), and for eight years on river barges owned by Mulzer Crushed Stone Inc. and Hines Furlong  Lines. She had past affiliations with Wheeler Mission Girls Home and Lucille Raines Residence in Indianapolis as a housemother and counselor. In later years, Betty delighted in making ceramics, nativity candles, crafts, family quilts and many crocheted and knitted items for her family and friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Judge Warren W. Martin; and children, Judge Warren W. Martin, Jr., Dr. Presley Martin, Laura and Doris Martin and Phyllis Wilson.

Survivors include her sister, Judy Baughman, Brown County; her children, Walter Martin of Cadiz, Ky., Neville Martin of Searcy, Ark., Stanley Martin of Elberfeld, Stephen Martin of Newburgh, Sharon Malady of Gig Harbor, Wash., Marlene Castro of Hopkinsville, Ky. and Carole Reed of Loveland, Colo.; 25 grandchildren; multiple great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 14 at Titzer Funeral Home in Newburgh.

Visitation for family and friends will be on Wednesday, March 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. and will continue Thursday at 9 a.m. until service time.

Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Boonville.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Betty Martin can be made to Waycross Inc., 7363 Bear Creek Road, Morgantown, IN 46160.
