Rev. David K. Harness, 66, passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013 at Kindred Hospital South in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Indianapolis.
David was born Nov. 25, 1946, in Beech Grove to George L. and Evelyn P. (Reeves) Harness. He was a 1965 graduate of Southport High School and went on to serve as a private with the U.S. Army National Guard during the Vietnam War.
In 1972, David received a bachelor’s degree in theology from the Apostolic Bible Institute. He was a 1986 graduate of the Insurance Institute and earned a pastoral counseling certification in 2006 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He retired in 2012 as a regional claims manager for Farm Bureau Insurance in Indianapolis after 32 years of service. Prior to that,he was the chaplain for the Marion County Sheriff’s Department and held the same position for the Perry Township Fire Department. He was also was chaplain emeritus of the Indiana Civil Air Patrol. David was presently the chaplain for the Homecroft Police Department. He also was a pastor at several churches during his lifetime. He was devoted to the doing the Lord’s work.
He was a published author and songwriter and even played a role in the move "Seven Deadly Words." He enjoyed being an advanced ham radio operator, fishing and playing the guitar and piano. David was a fan of the Indianapolis Colts and loved being with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda S. (Thomas) Harness, whom he married Aug. 9, 2009, in Fishers. Also surviving are his children, Rebecca (Ryan) Nordman of Indianapolis, the Rev. Jonathan D. (Buffy) Harness of Morgantown and Ronald Harness of Nashville, Tenn. He will be remembered by his sister, Donna (Ron) Martin of Fairland; 11 grandchildren and one granddaughter on the way.
David was preceded in death by one grandson, David DeWayne Harness.
The Revs. Jonathan D. Harness and David Dugas will conduct a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8 at St. David’s Abundant Life Fellowship Church, 140 E. Washington St. in Morgantown. Friends can call from 2-8 p.m. Monday at the church. Military honors will be presented by the Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars honor guards after the funeral Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Green Valley Cemetery in Nashville. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.
