The driver of a truck that allegedly fled police after a traffic stop attempt earlier this week wound up in a medical helicopter then an Indianapolis hospital bed.

On Monday, Deputy Paul Henderson of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop in the 7100 block of Upper Salt Creek Road, but the white Dodge Dakota did not stop when the deputy turned on his lights, according to a news release.

The truck, driven by a male later identified as 40-year-old James E. Wagers of North Vernon, attempted to speed off, the release noted.

Henderson reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle in approximately the 7400 block of Upper Salt Creek Road, overcorrected and left the roadway. The vehicle then flipped into a creek and rolled several times before coming to rest on the passenger side.

After determining the occupants were unable to get out, fire and EMS units were called to the scene. They were able to get the driver and passenger out.

The release stated that Wagers suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. The passenger, 29-year-old Kim Wagner of North Vernon, had only minor injuries. She was treated at the scene and released into custody of the Brown County Sheriff's Office due to arrest warrants out of Bartholomew and Johnson counties.

On Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said Wagers was in good condition and would be discharged soon.

Wagers has an outstanding Brown County warrant for failure to appear in a criminal case filed against him in June. In that case, he faces misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and criminal mischief. Details regarding the case remain unclear as the Brown County Prosecutor’s Office filed a criminal summons rather than a probable cause affidavit, which includes a report from investigating officers.

As of Thursday, no new charges had been filed against Wagers.
