Norma Ruth (Bengel) Metzger, 88, Unionville

Norma Ruth (Bengel) Metzger, 88, of Unionville, departed this life at Grandview Health and Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville, Nov. 2, 2012.

She was born July 22, 1924, to Ernst Rudolf Bengel and Ida Mae Zimmer in Clark County.

On Oct. 30, 1943, she married Jesse G. Metzger, who was then serving in the Army Air Corps. She had four children, Michael Bengel Metzger of Bloomington, William Frederick Metzger III of Carmel, Deborah Marie (Metzger) Prickett of Brownsburg, and Mark Douglass Metzger of Indianapolis. She also had eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her husband of 69 years, Jesse, survives her, as do all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In her youth, Norma was a gifted amateur musician, playing the piano, marimba and alto clarinet. Later in life, she became a passionate horsewoman, both riding and raising Arabian horses, and gardener. She also avidly practiced crochet and cross-stitch. After her child-rearing duties were complete, she resumed playing her beloved piano. For most of her married life she was a homemaker, but when no one could be found to drive a bus for special needs children in Warren Township, where she and Jesse lived until retiring to the north shore of Lake Lemon, she volunteered to do so, a post she retained for approximately 30 years until retirement.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Walter Bengel; and a sister, Dorothy (Bengel) Everett.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Costin Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Mick Aldridge officiating. Visitation was prior to the service. She was to be interred in the family plot at Henryville on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
