James “Greenbriar” W. Morgan, 88, of Bloomington, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at Brown County Health and Living Community in Nashville. He was born Aug. 7, 1924, in Columbia, Ky., to the late Gobel George and Naomi Pearl (Ballinger) Morgan. He was a WW II veteran of the 3rd US Army, where he served under Gen. George Patton in the Battle of the Bulge. James was a stone cutter, deputy sheriff for Monroe County in the early 1960s, National Guard retired, and co-owner of Pit Stop Tavern. His memberships include Monroe Masonic Lodge #22, life member of VFW 604 Bloomington, Scottish Rite Indianapolis, National Guard Armory. He was also a member of the American Legion, Shriner Murat Temple in Indianapolis, Shriner Stone Belt, and Kentucky Colonel.
Surviving family members include daughter, Barbara Hollingsworth (husband, Scott) of Bloomington; grandson, James R. Douglas (wife, Maria) of Bloomington; granddaughter, Heather Sylvester (husband, Mark) of Greene County; great-grandchildren, Nicole Douglas and Lacey Sylvester, both of Bloomington, Grace Douglas of Indianapolis, Avery and Ezra Douglas, both of Bloomington; great-great-grandchildren, Matthew Douglas of Greene County and Hunter Sylvester of Bloomington; sisters, Betty Grubb and Judy Martindale, both of Bloomington; brothers, Gene Paul (wife, Evelyn) and David Morgan (friend, Jeannie Pless).
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn (Hamm) Morgan; stepson, Rick Shields; brothers-in-law, Jess Martindale and Larry Grubb.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, at Allen Funeral Home, 4155 South Old State Road 37, Bloomington, with visitation 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the funeral home. A Masonic service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday eve. Burial will take place at Garrison Chapel Cemetery.
