The Brown County Eagles led for three quarters, but a personal foul and blown coverage allowed the Mitchell Blue Jackets to score the winning touchdown late in the game.

The Eagles (1-5, 0-3 WIC) fell 14-8 in front of their home crowd at homecoming Friday night. The loss is the team’s fifth in a row in a season that started with high hopes with junior quarterback Dillon Boknecht at the helm.

Brown County began the game with an onside kick that caught the Blue Jackets off guard. With rain falling, the Eagles turned the ball over on downs, but stopped Mitchell to get the ball back. From 36 yards out, the Eagles’ drive included a quarterback keeper, a short-yardage catch, a Mitchell late-hit penalty and a run play followed by a Boknecht touchdown pass to wide receiver Ben Shauger.

The Eagles secured a two-point conversion on a Boknecht pass, but that proved to be the last time the team would score.

In the fourth quarter, Mitchell continued to run the ball effectively before the Eagles committed a spearing offense that cost them a 15-yard setback. A few plays later, Dallas Cobb found himself alone in the secondary for a Lucas Jakub pass that resulted in a walk-in score that put Mitchell ahead 12-8 with 4:43 remaining.

After a successful two-point conversion, Mitchell forced an Eagles fumble and ran out the clock with the run game and a knee at the end.

Afterward, Eagles Coach Ken Wendling said the contest contained nothing noteworthy as far as the quality of football his team played.
