After about 2 hours of discussion, the Nashville Town Council decided to hold off on a vote to rezone the historical society building on State Road 135 North. The council opted to offer the neighbors in the Orchard Hill area and the rezoning petitioner, Big Woods Brewing Co., a chance to sit down and discuss their needs. The council has scheduled a vote on the rezoning request for Thursday, Oct. 4. That meeting will begin at 7 p.m., after the 6:30 p.m. town budget adoption.

The Brown County Area Plan Commission voted 6-1 in August to give the rezoning request, from R1 (residential) to B3 (business), a positive recommendation. The town council, as the executive body, has the final say.

Big Woods is seeking to buy the historical society building to triple its capacity for brewing craft beer and bottle it for wider distribution.

The historical society is seeking to sell the building and raise funds to build a history center in downtown Nashville. But it also wants the correct zoning for the building no matter what the outcome of this potential sale. The building is currently zoned residential when it has a more than 50-year history of being used for business purposes.

Neighbors of the building want to protect their peace and property values from future uses of that property if it is rezoned to B3. That designation allows virtually any business to operate on the site.
