Charles Allen Cody, 70, Seymour, died Tuesday evening at Schneck Medical Center surrounded by his family.
Born March 18, 1942, in Nashville, he was the son of James Charles John and Dorothy Lorene (Chafin) Cody.
At age 17, Charlie joined the U.S. Navy and served his country for six years. Upon returning from military, he worked at Cummins Engine Company for 24 years and was then a member of the BTJ Pipefitter Refrigeration Union Local 440. Charlie also was a member of the American Legion Post 89, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 655 and VFW Post 1925. Starting at an early age, he had a tremendous love of racing. Throughout his life he raced and built race cars and enjoyed watching NASCAR and USAC series racing. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his daughters, Michelle (Joby) Gossett, Christina (Steve) Bloom, Shanna Watts, Natalie (Chris) Jones and Debi (Paul) Bridgewater. Also surviving are brothers, Kerry and Mike Cody; sisters, Rose Bowman and Betty Sue (Ron) Whitis,; 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Zachary Lee Cody; and three brothers, James, Billy and Robert Dean Cody.
A private family service will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Freetown Funeral Chapel, 4595 W. First St. in Freetown, IN 47235. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or donor’s choice in care of the funeral home.
