Bertha Elizabeth “Betty” VanDerbilt, 96, of Nashville

Bertha Elizabeth “Betty” VanDerbilt, 96, of Nashville passed away Thursday, Aug. 23 at Columbus Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of Vern Corwin VanDerbilt, Sr. & Elizabeth Lyne (Connette) VanDerbilt born May 16, 1916 in Indianapolis.

Betty attended Orchard, Tudor Hall, & Ladywood schools prior to graduating from Shortridge High School. She attended Depauw University & was a graduate of Butler and Syracuse universities. She studied concert, opera, and radio music. Betty was a musician and vocalist, and she performed at Carnegie Hall. She previously had a radio show in Indianapolis. She also served as a soloist for several churches.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. at Nashville United Methodist Church, 36 S. Jefferson St.  Rev. Fred Haywood will officiate. The family will receive visitors at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.

Survivors include her brother, Vern C. VanDerbilt, Jr. PhD., of Hagerstown; nephews, Vern C. VanDerbilt III, PhD. (Lynne), Burton L. VanDerbilt, M.D. (Carletta), and Jeffry N. VanDerbilt, PhD. (Kit) .

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters in infancy, Lazette May & Constance Louise VanDerbilt.
