The Brown County Water Utility is asking for help from its customers to conserve water during the drought.

The utility, which supplies water to most of Brown County and portions of Bartholomew, Johnson, Morgan and Monroe counties, issued a notice on Thursday, June 28.

It read, “Central Indiana is currently experiencing a severe drought and Brown County Water Utility needs everyone’s cooperation to conserve water. If the area receives little or no rain for the next two weeks as forecasts indicate, BCWU may call for mandatory water usage restrictions. Conservation steps are important.”

Those steps include limiting the watering of lawns and gardens or unnecessary water usage.

The notice stated that heavy water usage is putting stress on the distribution system, which can lead to costly main breaks. It also stated that conservation is the right thing to do for the environment and it will save customers money.

“Brown County Water Utility appreciates everyone’s cooperation as it works to ensure the reliable delivery of our most valuable natural resource,” the notice stated.
