FAFSA open for 2022-2023

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application window for the 2022-2023 school year is now open.

The deadline to submit the application is on April 15, 2022.

The application is required to be considered for many of Indiana’s scholarships and grants.

The FAFSA can be completed online by visiting FAFSA.gov. Students will need the following:

  • Social Security number
  • Alien Registration number (for non-U.S. citizens)
  • Federal income tax returns, W-2s and other records of money earned from 2020
  • Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
  • Records of untaxed income (if applicable)

Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship applications open

The application for Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship is now open.

The scholarship is for high school and college students who are planning to teach in Indiana for at least five years. Applicants could receive up to $30,000 total, or $7,500 per college year.

Students must have either graduated in the top 20 percent of their high school class or earned a score in the top 20th percentile on the SAT (1190) or ACT (26) to qualify for the scholarship.

To continue receiving the scholarship in college, students must file FAFSA each year, earn a 3.0 cumulative GPA and complete at least 30 credit hours per year.

Applicants will be notified of the scholarship status on March 18, 2022.

Free classes, resources available at CRC

The Career Resource Center is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. The CRC is closed on Fridays and the weekends.

Certified nursing assistant training begins on Oct. 12 and are free to those who qualify. An American Sign Language class will be held on Oct. 13 from 6 to 7 p.m. There is a $100 fee for this class.

Ivy Tech enrollment is currently open. Virtual office hours will be held every Tuesday in October from noon to 1 p.m.

BETA programs, teen center open at the Y

BETA teen center now meets at the Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St., on Tuesdays that Brown County Schools are in session.

BETA is open from 3 to 6:30 p.m. for teens in grades 6 to 12 to meet, hang out and participate in activities. Homeschool students are also welcome.

Snacks will be available. Free drumming and keyboard lessons are from 4 to 5 p.m. every Tuesday. Jewelry making is every third Tuesday.

Free guitar lessons are also available.

Head Start preschool now open for enrollment

Brown County Head Start, which meets at the YMCA at 105 Willow St., has openings for preschool enrollment.

Head Start is a year-round program for qualified families. There are several ways a family can become eligible to send their child to Head Start for free.

Children are eligible if a family meets income guidelines; a child is in foster care or a ward of the state; if a family receives certain government assistance; or a child has a disability or special needs. Students age 3 to 5 can be registered for programs.

Children do not need to be potty-trained to attend. Bus pickup is available and meals are provided.
