David Earl Miller was born to Louis V. and Norma L. Miller October 23, 1952 in Terre Haute, IN, but grew up in Bloomington, IN. He attended St. Charles Elementary School, Binford Jr. High and Bloomington High School, and then studied at Indiana University.
As a young man David enjoyed bicycling, swimming, piano and especially reading. During his many years in Duluth, MN he loved camping out in severe northern winters, cross-country skiing and always a trip back home to visit family and friends. He also enjoyed attending the annual Bill Monroe celebrations in Brown County.
His love for playing Bluegrass on all its instruments led to taking part in fiddle competitions where he won some awards. He wrote Bluegrass music, then “mixed” his composition, playing on different instruments.
David’s most rewarding and final employment in Duluth was in a group home caring for men with disabilities. He recently had retired to Nashville, IN because of the music culture and nearness to family in Bloomington.
David is survived by his mother, Norma; sister, Renee (Tyna); brother, Evan (Kelly); brother-in-law, Tom Pfister and David’s former wife, Mary Vanderwerp; nephews, Kevan and James; nieces, Anna, Michelle, Katie, Tina, Sarah and Caroline; as well as several great-nieces, great-nephews and close cousins in Illinois, Colorado, Iowa and east coast.
David was pre-deceased by his grandparents; father, Louis; sister, Robin; cousin, Randall; aunts, Florence and Josephine; and uncle, Henry.
There will be a graveside service for the family at a later date.
Memorial contributions in memory of David may be made through the Bloomington Homeless Coalition, for “Robin and Trisha’s House.”
It is a transitional house for men in Monroe County named after David’s sister Robin. Tax deductible contributions can be made through Great Harvest Ministry Center of Bloomington with a note in memo line, Robin and Trisha’s House.
