Letter: ‘Act accordingly’ when leaders do wrong or do nothing

To the editor:

There was a letter to the editor by a Mr. Reuter as I read today’s (June 2) Democrat. It addressed free speech. I agree with what was said. It was well-written and timely. It dealt with students, but adults have our fair share of issues too. And when we do exercise our freedom of speech we are also accountable for what we say.

In recent weeks the Republican Party has been caught up in some serious issues. I don’t intend to rehash those here. I think those of us who have been a part of the Republican Party need to watch now and see how this is handled by our leaders — those elected, appointed and self-proclaimed. You have chosen to be a leader. Think of it this way (I had to look up the exact quote): “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

That’s not to say Mr. Reuter was wrong, only that once something has been spoken, others have the opportunity to determine their agreement. If the speaker is in leadership then you have to decide if they reflect your values and vote accordingly.
