John William Henkle Sr., 92, of Orlando, passed away peacefully Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019 at Cornerstone Hospice surrounded by his family. He was born May 8, 1927 in Daleville, Indiana, the youngest of four children born to the late Charles and Ethel (Clark) Henkle.
Mr. Henkle moved to Brown County, Indiana with his family and was a 1945 graduate of Van Buren High School. He served in the US Navy during World War II and upon his return to Brown County married the love of his life, Atha Lorene (Greathouse) Henkle, on April 16, 1949. John and Lorene moved with their four children to Orlando, Florida in 1963, where he worked at the US Postal Service until his retirement.
Upon retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Henkle enjoyed many adventures traveling across the country, ultimately visiting all fifty states together. John was a skilled wood-worker and gardener and a clock enthusiast. His patient and clever nature meant he could fix just about anything. He also enjoyed reading western novels and listening to classic country music. Mr. Henkle was a kind and gentle husband, father, and grandfather and was always happy to help his family in any way he could. He delighted in spending time with his children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren and will be remembered as a true family man, always standing by his loved ones in times of happiness and joy, as well as sadness and trouble.
Mr. Henkle was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Lorene, by just 17 days. He is also preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Charles Henkle Jr. and Scott Henkle.
He is survived by his four children: John (Joan) Henkle Jr., Jack (Nancy) Henkle, Jeff (Melanie Gay) Henkle, Judy (Dennis) McNulty, and as well as ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and his sister, Leona (Henkle) Emrick.
A memorial service celebrating Mr. Henkle’s life was held on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019 with visitation at 10 a.m. and a service at 11 a.m. at the Woodlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home (400 Woodlawn Cemetery Rd, Gotha, FL 34734). Interment followed at noon.
