Letter: Thanks to all who helped with marker placement

To the editor:

With all the changes taking place in Nashville, I wanted to share a recent experience.

In preparation for Peaceful Valley Heritage’s Frank Hohenberger historical marker event we wanted to make the surrounding businesses and police aware of its happening. We were also requesting that they place a flyer in their windows announcing the event. In doing so, it was very heartwarming to find how quickly Frank’s name and legacy were recognized. Some were not only willing to post the flyer, but offered their help, if needed.

Jane Rogers Herr gave permission to use the outside property of the Nashville House and away we swept. Vivian Wolff, with Cathy and David Martin, weeded as much as they could. Poison ivy was the big problem, as Jan Spears has experienced. Thank goodness non-allergic Matt Eaton came to the rescue.

We borrowed The Creperie’s glass tables, and the Heritage Mall Candy Shop lent us their benches. Jane graciously opened the doors to the Old Country Store for a short time so people could see the many photos which Hohenberger once mounted and hung there. One of the guests shared that her great-great grandfather’s photo was one. The Spearses also opened the doors from their side as another access. Ray Zeigler and his wife, Sharon, came from Columbus and brought their book of Hohenberger photos to share.

Others who came were from the historical society, Town Hall, the Brown County Community Foundation and the Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Some of our speakers came from Indy and Bloomington. Buzz King gave it a personal touch. We were disappointed the mic did not work, but thankful to have Sara Clifford from The Democrat and WTIU News there to record the event.

How timely it seemed that when Matt was clearing the space for the marker that he unearthed a grist stone and metal wheel that Andy Rogers or his father, Jack, must have placed there. Could it be that Jack, Andy and Frank, who were friends, were smiling?

Yes, sometimes it takes a village. How greatly blessed we are to have a community that supports each other and values its heritage. We thank you all for sharing and helping.
