INDIANAPOLIS — The mother and infant who were the subjects of a search yesterday in Indianapolis had ties to Brown County.

Rachel McAfee, 36, is the former Rachel Seibel who grew up in Brown County. Her grandfather was Dr. Robert Seibel, who served as Brown County’s health officer for more than 50 years and operated a clinic in Nashville.

On Tuesday afternoon, McAfee was found in her vehicle on the northwest side of Indianapolis. Her infant daughter, Emma, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to multiple Indianapolis news outlets. McAfee was taken to a hospital for treatment.

On Wednesday morning, McAfee was preliminarily charged with neglect of a dependent causing death, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Indianapolis police reported in a news release Tuesday that McAfee might have been dealing with postpartum depression.

Family and friends had spread word around social media about McAfee’s vehicle description, her photo and the baby’s photo, and the route she might have taken to get to her mother-in-law’s home to drop off the baby before a meeting on Monday morning. Mom and baby never arrived.

The Marion County coroner’s office was to examine the baby to determine a cause of death.

Susan Seibel, Rachel’s mother, posted a message late last night on Facebook:

“I want to thank everyone who prayed for Rachel and Emma and for our family these past couple of days. Many of you we don’t know, but will always be thankful for your support. We have faith in a loving God who will hold our hands throughout the remainder of this horrible ordeal. Today you were the hands and feet of Jesus. Some of you searched for them, and some called hospitals and jails. Some of you sent little messages that warmed our hearts enough to continue to breathe for the next few minutes when it felt so hopeless. Some called to let us know we were on their heart. Steve and I literally cried out to God for help. Part of that help was you. Thank you ALL more than words can say. We are forever thankful.”
