Resident reports Social Security number scam

A Brown County resident says she received two scam calls today from a person telling her that her Social Security had been “discontinued.”

Two calls came in this morning, Gloria Sooby told The Democrat this afternoon. They directed her to call another phone number to correct the problem with her Social Security number.

Sooby called the Brown County Sheriff’s Department to report those calls, then was then instructed to call the Indiana Attorney General’s office, she said. However, she said the Attorney General’s office told her they cannot file a report unless she had fallen for the scam and had lost money because of it.

Sooby said this was the first time her household had received such calls and she wanted to inform others who might think it’s legitimate.

The number that called her was 254-987-6996.
