Letter: Literacy coalition thankful for foundation’s grant

0

To the editor:

The Brown County Literacy Coalition works closely with the Brown County school corporation to provide early childhood reading support to children in our elementary schools.

At the end of last year, we were informed that school employees were being required to provide updated and enhanced background checks. Because we do our tutoring inside the schools, our volunteers also were being required to obtain these background checks.

We value our tutors’ time and energy, and so we pay for their background checks. But this end-of-year change was a budget item we hadn’t anticipated.

Where would we find the funds? The Brown County Community Foundation swooped in and provided us with a small emergency grant that covered the cost of the background checks.

Once again, the Brown County Community Foundation has understood the importance of the work we do to help ensure a lifetime of success for Brown County kids.

Thank you to Larry Pejeau, director, Brown County Community Foundation, and to the foundation’s board of directors.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Bolte, president, Brown County Literacy Coalition
