To usher in the first day of spring, Brown County was greeted by 4.5 inches of snow Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

The heavy, wet snow sent trees toppling — 43 of them between 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night and 3:45 Wednesday, according to the sheriff’s log. Brown County Highway Superintendent Mike Magner said the trees were much more of a problem than pushing snow from the roads, as rising temperatures throughout the day helped to clear it naturally.

Emergency responders also dealt with three “line down” calls and six driver slide-offs. It took much of the morning to restore power to more than 1,000 Duke and South Central REMC customers in various parts of the county.

Meanwhile, kids made the best of their unexpected day off from school.
