A Fishers man was injured after he checked his phone while driving, causing him to crash into a tree.

Donald H. Hardee, 21, told police he was driving on State Road 46 West on Feb. 18 near Crooked Creek Road when his mother attempted to call him. When he looked down at his phone and looked back up, he realized he was running off the road, an accident report by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Stargell states.

Hardee said his vehicle left the north side of the road, went through a small ditch and then up an embankment before striking a tree head-on.

Stargell reported that Hardee said he was probably driving too fast; he estimated he was traveling between 50 and 55 MPH.

Hardee was wearing a seat belt. He was treated at the scene for minor bleeding to his face. His vehicle was towed.
