PEOGA — A woman was shot and died over the weekend at a home on Peoga Road.

Just before noon Sunday, deputies responded to the 3800 block of Peoga Road near the Brown-Johnson county line for a report of shots fired, according to a press release from the Brown County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies found Ashley Minatel, 33, dead from a gunshot wound. Coroner Earl Piper said her body was in the front yard.

Piper said Minatel was killed by another person, but he would not comment on the cause of death, manner of death or how many times Minatel had been shot until an autopsy is complete. It was to start the afternoon of Feb. 19.

Piper said a handgun was used, but he was not sure of the caliber.

A 35-year-old man was at the scene when deputies arrived. He was taken in for questioning and was later released, the press release said.

That man also called police to report shots fired, Sherriff Scott Southerland said.

The man and Minatel both lived at that address, Southerland said.

No one had been booked into jail on any charges related to this incident as of Monday morning.

The sheriff’s department was assisted at the scene by Indiana State Police crime scene technicians.

This is an active investigation and more information will be released later, the sheriff’s department said in a press release Monday morning.

This is the first fatal, non-self-inflicted shooting in Brown County in nearly five years. The most recent was in November 2013, when police shot and killed a man who was running from them in the Annandale neighborhood on Thanksgiving night while they were trying to serve a warrant.
