GARDINER, Maine — Maine police say a high school science teacher has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl.

Authorities say 43-year-old John Glowa Jr., of Readfield, was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of gross sexual assault and one of furnishing liquor to a minor.

Court documents show the alleged assault happened Jan. 23 in a Mount Vernon home. The girl told police Glowa gave her several alcoholic drinks first.

School officials say Glowa was immediately placed on administrative leave from his position at Gardiner Area High School. Police say the girl was not a student at the school.

Glowa was held Wednesday at the Kennebec County Jail, where bail was set at $50,000. It was not known if he’d hired a lawyer.
